Once upon a time a small company formed a rowing team; it was a good rowing team and soon gained the attention of a large corporation. The large corporation decided they needed to form their own rowing team and challenge the smaller company to a race.
Both rowing teams worked really hard to get in shape for the big race. On the day of the race both teams were in similar condition.
The small company won by a mile!
The mood of the large corporate team was understandably anxious which created a great deal of internal conflict.
Top management decided they had to win the race next year. A team of analysts were hired to review the result and recommend an appropriate course of action.
After several detailed analysis were completed it was determined that the small company’s team was made up of 7 rowers and 1 captain. The large corporate team was made up of 7 captains and 1 rower. Once the analysis was complete the corporate management realized they needed to rectify the situation immediately. To this end a consulting company was brought in to restructure the corporate rowing team.
After several months the consultants concluded that the large corporate rowing team had too many captains and not enough rowers. A solution was proposed based on the exhaustive analysis which clearly showed that the structure of the rowing team had to change.
As of today there will only be 4 captains in the corporate rowing team. The captains will be supported by 2 managers who will in turn be managed by 1 top manager. There will still be only one rower but his working environment will be improved and he will be given higher competencies.
The next year the small company won by 2 miles!
The large corporate immediately fired the rower from the team due to unsatisfactory performance.
However a bonus was awarded to the managers due to the strong motivation the team showed during the preparation phase.
The consulting company prepared a new analysis which showed
· The strategy was good.
· The motivation was ok.
· The tools used need to be improved.
The large corporation is currently building a new boat…
